Questions About Parks & Trails in Latvia?
Find answers about accessibility, routes, and planning your visit to Latvia's most beautiful green spaces for seniors.
Both parks have paved pathways that work well for most seniors, though Mežaparks is generally flatter and easier for longer walks—it's about 5 km around the lake if you want the full loop. Bastejkalns has some stairs and inclines, but there are alternative routes that avoid the steepest sections, and you can enjoy the views from the lower rampart areas without climbing.
The full circuit takes 60–90 minutes depending on pace, but you don't need to do it all at once. There are benches throughout the park every 200–300 meters, plus cafés and rest areas near the boat house and main entrance. Many visitors do shorter segments of 20–30 minutes with breaks in between, which works perfectly for a comfortable pace.
Late May through September is ideal—flowers are blooming, the weather's mild, and there's plenty of shade under the old trees. Spring (April–May) is also lovely if you enjoy fresh growth, but some paths can be muddy. Avoid November through March when it's damp and dark early in the day.
Yes—our detailed guides for each location include specific accessibility notes, surface types, and wheelchair-accessible facilities. Mežaparks and Tērvete Nature Park have the best accessible pathways, while Bastejkalns and Rundāle require more planning. Check our individual park guides for exact access points and facilities.

Bring comfortable walking shoes with good grip (paths can be slippery in wet weather), a light rain jacket, sunscreen, and water. A small backpack for snacks is helpful since park cafés can be busy. For Rundāle and Tērvete, add a hat or umbrella for shade—there's less tree cover in some sections. Check the weather forecast the night before and dress in layers.
